Breaker panel diagnostics start with tracing the fault, not swapping the breaker and hoping it holds.
A breaker that trips once a month is a nuisance. One that trips twice a week is a symptom, and swapping it for an identical breaker without tracing the circuit just buys another callback. We open the panel, read the directory, and test before anything gets replaced.
Why a breaker keeps tripping
Most circuit tripping repair calls in Austin fall into four buckets, and they don't feel the same from the outside. A breaker that trips the instant it's reset, before anything is even plugged in, usually means a short somewhere in the fixed wiring — a nail through a cable, a wire nut that let go inside a ceiling box. A breaker that trips only under load, five or ten minutes after the space heater or the window unit kicks on, is almost always overload: too much drawn through a 15-amp circuit that was never meant to run it. A GFCI or GFCI breaker that won't reset at all, or resets and trips again within seconds, points to a ground fault, often moisture in an outdoor box or a bathroom fan connection that's been rained on for years.
The fourth bucket is the one people call the most confusing: a breaker that trips only sometimes, only in certain weather, only when the dryer runs. That's usually a loose connection heating up under load — a backstabbed outlet three rooms away, a lug on the breaker itself that was never torqued to spec. We use a multimeter and, where the panel allows it, a thermal check under load, rather than guessing from the directory card.
A GFCI that won't reset twice in one week means the outlet is wired backwards or the circuit is wet somewhere behind the wall. We find which.
Twelve-gauge wire on a 15-amp breaker is legal and common in older Austin housing stock; fifteen-gauge on a 20 is not, and we've found it three times this year, usually where a previous repair spliced in whatever was on the truck. Gauge mismatches like that don't always trip anything right away. They just run hot, and the breaker earns the blame for a wiring decision it had nothing to do with.
Arc-fault versus GFCI breakers
These get confused constantly because they both live in the panel and both trip without warning, but they're watching for different failures. A GFCI breaker measures current leaving on the hot and returning on the neutral; if even a few milliamps go missing, likely through a person or water, it trips in a fraction of a second. An arc-fault breaker listens for the electrical signature of arcing — the crackle of a loose connection or a nicked cable — and trips before that arcing has a chance to start a fire inside a wall cavity.

Swapping a nuisance-tripping AFCI for a standard breaker is not something we'll do to make the tripping stop. It solves the symptom and removes the protection the circuit needed in the first place. If an AFCI is tripping on a circuit that should be clean, the fix is finding what's arcing, not deleting the breaker that caught it.
The panel labeling process
We label every breaker we touch. If the panel we're handed has no directory, or one that reads "misc" and "misc 2," we write one before we leave — walking the house room by room, killing one breaker at a time, and confirming what actually went dark rather than copying whatever the last electrician assumed. It adds twenty to forty minutes to a visit and it's the difference between a panel a landlord can hand off and one nobody trusts.
For rental properties this matters more than it looks like it should: a tenant calling about "no power in the kitchen" is a five-minute fix if the directory says which breaker feeds it, and an hour of guessing if it doesn't.
When a diagnostic turns into a referral
A diagnostic call sometimes finds something bigger than a bad breaker. When that happens we say so on site, in the written scope, before doing anything else.
- A panel with visible burning, double-tapped lugs throughout, or a bus bar that's discolored gets a full replacement recommendation, not a breaker swap. We'll name who does panel replacements in Austin rather than stretch our own scope to cover it.
- No generator work, no service upgrades past 200 amp, no solar interconnects. If the diagnostic points that direction we say who to call instead, on the spot.

Panel Diagnostics — what the call covers
Breaker tracing, an arc-fault or GFCI breaker swap where that's the actual fix, and a written panel directory left behind whether or not further work happens. This is the flat-fee item on our list: the diagnostic call itself is priced once, and if the repair proceeds the same visit, that fee is credited toward it rather than charged twice.
