Boxes

Fans on the right box

A light fixture box is rated for maybe 50 pounds hanging dead still. A ceiling fan is neither light nor still: it's a motor spinning an out-of-balance load with vibration going into the ceiling joist through the box, year after year. Building code treats them as different categories for a reason, and we don't install a fan on a box that isn't stamped or listed for it, full stop.

Where there's attic access above the room, the fan-rated fix is usually a brace box: a bar that spans between joists with a box clamped to the middle of it, adjustable to hit the exact spot the fan needs to hang. That's a clean job from above, no drywall cut, done from the attic in under an hour once we're up there.

Where the ceiling below is finished and there's a floor above it, we don't have that option. That's a saddle-mount box: we cut a hole sized to the box, the box's own bracket screws into the joists on either side through the opening, and the drywall patch goes back in around it. The cut is small, roughly the size of the box itself, and it's part of the written scope before we start, not a surprise line on the invoice.

We test the box by hand before the fan goes up: grab the bracket and pull down and sideways, hard, the way a five-year fan will eventually be shaken by its own motor. If it moves, it wasn't the box we thought it was, and we stop and re-brace it there.

Installation

Hanging the fan

Ceiling height decides the mount. Under roughly nine feet, a flush or "hugger" mount keeps the blades close to the ceiling and out of anyone's head; above that, a downrod moves more air and looks less stranded on a tall ceiling. We ask the ceiling height before quoting so the client isn't standing there holding a downrod that doesn't fit the room.

Wobble complaints almost never come from a bad box once the box passes the pull test. Most of the time it's a warped blade or blades of uneven weight straight from the factory, which we check with a blade-balancing kit rather than guessing. The other common cause is a canopy screwed down unevenly against a ceiling that isn't quite flat, which we shim rather than force.

Control wiring matters as much as the mounting. A fan with separate light and blade control needs either a dual-gang switch, a remote receiver hidden in the canopy, or a smart fan controller, and each one wants a different conductor count at the box. We check what's actually pulled to the switch location before promising a remote control setup, because a two-wire switch loop with no neutral won't run most remote receivers without extra work.

Smart devices

Smart switches & dimmers

Smart switch installation starts with a question most homeowners haven't been asked: is there a neutral wire in that switch box. Older Austin houses, especially anything built before the mid-1980s, often ran switch loops with just two conductors and a ground, because a plain toggle switch never needed a neutral to work. Most Wi-Fi and hub-based smart switches do need one, to keep their radio powered when the load is off.

If the neutral is there, a smart switch or dimmer install is a straightforward per-device swap: we confirm the wiring, land the device, set up pairing with the app on the client's own phone, and confirm the light responds before we leave. If it isn't there, we say so on the spot. Pulling a neutral to the box is a per-circuit item, priced after we see the run, not folded quietly into the switch price.

Three-way circuits, where two switches control one light, need either a dedicated three-way smart switch pair or a smart switch plus a simple add-on switch wired for it. We won't wire a smart three-way with a plain contractor-grade add-on switch bought separately, because the two are rarely designed to talk to each other; we use the matched pair the switch manufacturer sells for that circuit.

We also won't promise a smart switch will hold its Wi-Fi connection in every closet or garage. Signal strength is a router problem, not an electrical one, and we say that plainly rather than let a client assume a bad connection means a bad install.

What we do confirm before we leave: the app pairs, the physical switch still works the light with no app open, and the neutral or ground terminations are torqued to the device manufacturer's spec, not just snugged by hand.

Compatibility

What won't pair

Dimmers built for incandescent bulbs use leading-edge phase control, cutting the front of the AC wave. Most modern dimmable LED lamps and a lot of LED driver boards inside recessed cans expect trailing-edge control instead, which cuts the back of the wave and is gentler on the driver electronics. Put a leading-edge dimmer on a trailing-edge LED driver and you get an audible buzz, flicker at the low end, or a light that won't dim past 20 percent no matter what the slider says.

Constant-current LED drivers, common in cheap retrofit recessed cans and some under-cabinet strips, are the worst match for almost any dimmer, smart or not. They're built to deliver a fixed current regardless of what's asked of them, which is exactly the behavior a dimmer is trying to interrupt. We flag these on sight and tell the client plainly: this fixture dims badly no matter which switch goes in, and the fix is a different driver or fixture, not a better switch.

Minimum load is the other failure mode nobody expects. Some dimmers, especially older ones, need a minimum wattage on the line to switch cleanly. A single 5-watt LED bulb can sit below that minimum and flicker even with a correctly matched dimmer. We check the total wattage on the circuit against the dimmer's rated minimum before calling a job finished, not after the callback.

We do not guarantee compatibility with every LED bulb brand on the market, because we don't manufacture the bulbs and the manufacturers change driver electronics inside the same model number without changing the packaging. What we guarantee is that we test with the bulbs actually in the fixture before we leave, and we tell you in writing if the dimmer needs to change to match what's installed.

If the box we find isn't fan-rated, the upgrade to a brace or saddle box is billed as a separate line, stated on the written scope before we start, not discovered after the invoice arrives. Nothing on this page is a binding quote; the number on your scope comes from the walkthrough, because the box, the ceiling height and the wiring behind the wall are different in every house.
